SR-55 (I-405 to I-5) Improvement Project

Construction Updates

OCTA, in cooperation with Caltrans, is improving 4 miles of SR-55 between I-405 and I-5. The project will add one regular lane and one carpool lane in each direction, as well as merge lanes between several interchanges.

Project Details

SR-55 is a vital north-south freeway that links central Orange County and beyond to the coastal region. More than 260,000 vehicles use this stretch of SR-55 every day, and that number is expected to grow to nearly 275,000 vehicles by 2040. To address this demand, OCTA and Caltrans are working together to deliver improvements to SR-55 between I-405 and I-5.

Schedule

August 2022 to 2027

WHAT: Crews are preparing to demolish and reconstruct the center median of SR-55 between I-405 and I-5 to accommodate a new carpool lane. As part of this work, crews will shift northbound SR-55 traffic onto newly constructed lanes. Intermittent nighttime lane and ramp closures will be required.

PERMANENT ON-RAMP CHANGE
As part of the traffic shift, the northbound McFadden Avenue on-ramp will be permanently restriped.

Once the new striping is in place, motorists using this on-ramp will only be able to access northbound I-5. Access to northbound SR-55 or southbound I-5 will no longer be available from this on-ramp. Motorists traveling to northbound SR-55 or southbound I-5 should use alternate routes.

This regional improvement will reduce congestion and delays by eliminating the weaving and merging near the SR-55/I-5 interchange. Motorists traveling on northbound SR-55 will still be able to merge right to access the northbound and southbound I-5 connectors.

Motorists using the McFadden Avenue on-ramp will only be able to access the northbound I-5 connector and must use alternate routes to access northbound SR-55 or southbound I-5.

This work may be loud. The schedule is subject to change due to inclement weather or unforeseen operational issues.

WHEN: 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. nightly, beginning as early as Monday, Oct. 26 and continuing for approximately two weeks.

Alternate Routes to NB SR-55 and SB I-5

To access northbound SR-55: Take Newport Avenue to the northbound I-5 ramp and stay in the right lane to access the northbound SR-55 connector.

To access southbound I-5: Take Newport Avenue to Nisson Road and turn right, then turn left on Red Hill Avenue and turn right to access the southbound I-5 on-ramp.

Southbound SR-55 Dyer Road Loop Off-Ramp Extended Closure

what:

Crews are expected to reconstruct the southbound (SB) SR-55 Dyer Road loop off-ramp, which will require an extended closure of the ramp as well as the inside lane on the SB SR-55 Dyer Road on-ramp.

when:

The off-ramp and inside lane are expected to close as soon as 9 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 13 and reopen to motorists by 9 p.m., Friday, Oct. 23.

This work may be loud. The schedule is subject to change due to inclement weather or unforeseen operational issues.
