OCTA, the city of San Clemente and Metrolink are working cooperatively on constructing safety enhancements at seven pedestrian railroad crossings along the beach trail. The $4.5 million construction program is expected to be completed by the end of 2013 and includes the infrastructure for a future audible warning system – stationary horns that sound like an approaching train horn, localizing the noise to the railroad crossing.

OCTA and Metrolink are committed to keeping Orange County safe around train tracks. Always remember to stop, look and listen for a train before crossing the tracks at designated pedestrian crossings.

Safety enhancements include wider paved areas, new fencing, additional crossing gate arms, improved signs and the installation of electrical work for the audible warning system.

Construction Alerts

The contractor will work on numerous crossings at a time and the majority of construction work will be done at night, from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. when the trail is closed. However, some daytime work is required and will take place between 6 a.m. and 5 p.m..

Please be advised, construction work may be loud and disruptive due to construction equipment and truck back-up alarms. Dates also are subject to change due to unforeseen operational factors and inclement weather. 

In other related rail improvements, the San Clemente Pier Station platform is currently under rehabilitation for the next few weeks. Please be advised this work may be loud and disruptive to nearby pedestrians and beachgoers.
