Construction Updates

OCTA, in cooperation with Caltrans, is improving the local interchange at Interstate 605 and Katella Avenue to improve mobility, smooth traffic flow, and enhance pedestrian and bicycle facilities.

Project Details

The I-605/Katella Avenue interchange connects the San Gabriel River Freeway, a major north-south transportation route in Orange and Los Angeles counties, with Katella Avenue, an east-west regional corridor.

The project will improve overall operations for vehicles, bicyclists and pedestrians by:

  • Modifying northbound and southbound ramps at Katella Avenue
  • Closing the gaps in existing bike lanes by adding Class II bike lanes along eastbound and westbound Katella Avenue
  • Enhancing sidewalk connectivity between Coyote Creek Channel and Epson Way
  • Constructing Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) curb ramps and installing new signage and crosswalk pavement markings

Construction Activities

Upcoming Extended Closure of Northbound I-605 Loop Off-Ramp

WHAT: Crews are expected to perform paving and realignment work on the northbound I-605 Katella Avenue loop off-ramp, which will require an extended closure of the ramp. Additional extended ramp closures are anticipated through the completion of the project.

WHEN: The loop off-ramp is expected to close as soon as 9 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 20 and reopen to motorists by 6 a.m., Monday, Aug. 31.

Long-Term Closure of Northbound I-605 Straight On-Ramp Is Underway

WHAT: Crews are performing realignment and reconstruction work on the northbound I-605 Katella Avenue straight on-ramp. To safely complete this work, the on-ramp will be closed for an extended period.

WHEN: The on-ramp closure began at 9 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 6, and is expected to reopen to motorists by 6 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 17.

Nighttime Closures for Overhead Sign Structure

WHAT: Crews are expected to conduct foundation work for the overhead sign structures along northbound I-605. This work will require nighttime closures of the following:

  • Northbound I-605 two outside lanes
  • Northbound I-605 straight off-ramp to eastbound Katella
  • Northbound I-605 loop off-ramp to westbound Katella

WHEN: Friday, Aug. 7 and Friday, Aug. 14, from 10 p.m. to 7 a.m.

This work may be loud. Residents may experience noise and light impacts from construction activities. The schedule is subject to change due to inclement weather of unforeseen operational issues.

Eastbound and Westbound Katella Avenue

Crews continue working behind k-rail to construct a new sidewalk and bike lane along eastbound and westbound Katella Avenue between I-605 and Epson Way. This week, crews are expected to place asphalt and complete final paving along both eastbound and westbound Katella Avenue.

This work may be loud. The schedule is subject to change due to weather or unforeseen operational issues.

Sidewalk Access

The sidewalk along eastbound Katella Avenue is open and available for pedestrian use. Construction activities are occurring behind k-rail barriers and do not affect access to the sidewalk. The westbound Katella Avenue sidewalk remains closed while crews continue construction activities in the area.

Closures and Detours

Please plan ahead and expect delays during these times. Nighttime closures typically occur between 9 p.m. to 7 a.m. Specific closures for the week of Aug. 10 include:

  • Outside lanes on eastbound and westbound Katella Avenue/Willow Street, at least one lane will be open to traffic at all times

Project Map

The rendering highlights planned improvements along Katella Avenue between Coyote Creek Channel and Epson Way. Key features include:

    • Reconfiguration of the northbound on- and off-ramps into a T-intersection
    • Addition of Class II bike lanes with hatched markings to indicate bike lane transitions
    • Installation of a new traffic signal at the northbound I-605/Katella Avenue off-ramp, along with upgraded signals at nearby intersections
    • Painted crosswalks and newly constructed sidewalks to enhance pedestrian access and safety
