Demolition Slated For Valley View Street Bridge

Reconstruction will occur one half at a time allowing for continued traffic flow
March 7, 2011

ORANGE – Demolition is slated to begin on the east half of the Valley View Street Bridge Thursday night, with work continuing Friday and Saturday nights as part of the West County Connectors project.
During the demolition, the Garden Grove Freeway (SR-22) will be closed nightly from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. between Goldenwest Street and Valley View Street.
Drivers should use the following detours:
• Traveling westbound on SR-22, exit Goldenwest Street, go south to Westminster Boulevard, head west on Westminster Boulevard to Seal Beach Boulevard, then north on Seal Beach Boulevard to access westbound SR-22 / northbound I-405
• Traveling southbound on San Diego Freeway (I-405) to eastbound SR-22, exit Seal Beach Boulevard, go south to Westminster Boulevard, head east on Westminster Boulevard to Goldenwest Street, then head north on Goldenwest Street to the eastbound SR-22.
In addition, Valley View Street will be closed during the same period between Garden Grove Boulevard and Tiffany Avenue and the following detours are suggested:
• Northbound Valley View Street/Bolsa Chica Road traffic will be directed to use Westminster Boulevard
• Southbound Valley View Street Boulevard traffic will directed to use Lampson Avenue
During the day, the SR-22 beneath the Valley View Street bridge and the bridge will be open to vehicles.
Pedestrian access on Valley View Street between the westbound Valley View off-ramp and Garden Grove Boulevard is closed while construction work to rebuild the bridge is under way.
Pedestrian Access will remain closed until early 2012 when the first half of the bridge is expected to be completed. The new bridge will include improved sidewalks, shoulders, lighting and aesthetic treatments.
Residents are encouraged to sign up for e-mail construction alerts to provide the latest information about work in the area. To sign up, visit www.octa.net/westcounty.
The $277 million West County Connectors project will improve traffic flow by directly connecting carpool lanes on the San Diego Freeway (I-405), San Gabriel River Freeway (I-605) and Garden Grove Freeway (SR-22).
The project is being built in two segments. The east segment will create direct carpool lane connections between the I-405 and SR-22 at Valley View Street. In addition, the east segment will reconstruct the southbound I-405 to eastbound SR-22 connector and reconstruct the Valley View Street bridge crossing over the SR-22.
The west segment will provide direct carpool lane connections between the I-405 and I-605 and reconstruct the Seal Beach Boulevard and northbound I-405/westbound SR-22/7th Street bridges.
