Bus Stop Safety and Accessibility Plan

PROJECT CONTACT

Overview

OCTA seeks to prepare a collaborative study to identify safety and access improvements near some of the highest ridership bus stops in Orange County. The Bus Stop Safety and Accessibility Plan (Plan) will leverage community engagement with comprehensive technical analysis to recommend safety enhancements and access improvements for pedestrians accessing OC Bus transit stops. A comprehensive walk audit within ¼ mile of study intersections serving the busiest bus stops will consider connections to nearby destinations and identify feasible engineering recommendations for implementation by local agencies. Safety enhancement recommendations will be prepared at 41 bus stops, with areas encompassing 300+ daily riders per stop, providing service to 12,500 daily riders in Anaheim, Costa Mesa, Garden Grove, and Santa Ana.

Development of the Plan will include a review of existing plans and recommendations related to the study areas, walk audits identifying infrastructure needs, engagement with community members, organizations and agency staff using traditional and innovative strategies.

The Plan will provide project-ready recommendations to position public agencies to seek local, state and/or federal funding to:

  • Increase safety around transit stops;
  • Increase transit ridership;
  • Support equitable access to bus stops;
  • Increase the percentage of local trips made by walking and biking;
  • Reduce greenhouse gas emissions and vehicle miles traveled; and
  • Improve local air quality.

Study Areas

The Plan will evaluate 41 bus stops in the OCTA transit system which occur at 12 intersections located in the cities of Anaheim, Costa Mesa, Garden Grove, and Santa Ana.
