I-605/Katella Avenue Interchange
Construction Updates
OCTA, in cooperation with Caltrans, is improving the local interchange at Interstate 605 and Katella Avenue to improve mobility, smooth traffic flow, and enhance pedestrian and bicycle facilities.
Project Details
The I-605/Katella Avenue interchange connects the San Gabriel River Freeway, a major north-south transportation route in Orange and Los Angeles counties, with Katella Avenue, an east-west regional corridor.
The project will improve overall operations for vehicles, bicyclists and pedestrians by:
- Modifying northbound and southbound ramps at Katella Avenue
- Closing the gaps in existing bike lanes by adding Class II bike lanes along eastbound and westbound Katella Avenue
- Enhancing sidewalk connectivity between Coyote Creek Channel and Epson Way
- Constructing Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) curb ramps and installing new signage and crosswalk pavement markings

Construction Activities
Construction is underway and generally occurs Monday through Friday, from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Center Median Reconstruction
Nighttime work for the reconstruction of the center median that is east of the Coyote Creek Channel is expected to continue through the end of August. Crews will continue concrete work for the curb of the new median.
Vegetation Removal
Crews will continue nighttime vegetation removal until mid-August. Next week, work will focus on clearing vegetation near the northbound I-605 on-ramp. This will necessitate closing the outside lanes of northbound I-605, as well as the on-ramp, nightly from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m., starting Monday, August 4, through Friday, August 8 (extending into early Saturday morning).
Additionally, several trees that interfere with planned improvements along westbound Katella Avenue are scheduled for removal in mid-August. Further details regarding any impacts from this work will be provided in the coming week.
These activities will require the following closures as early as 9 p.m. to 5 a.m., Monday, Aug. 4 through Friday Aug. 8 (into Saturday morning)
- Inside lane on eastbound and westbound Katella Avenue/Willow Street, at least one lane will be open to traffic at all times
- Two outside lanes on northbound I-605 at Katella Avenue/Willow Street; at least one lane will be open to traffic at all times
- Northbound I-605 on-ramp from eastbound/westbound Katella Avenue - click here to view detour
- Southbound I-605 off-ramp to eastbound Katella Avenue - click here to view detour
- Southbound I-605 loop and straight on-ramps from Katella Avenue - click here to view detour
Construction Safety Zone Reminder
As the new school year approaches, it’s crucial for drivers, parents, and students to remain vigilant around construction zones. Here are some important reminders to help ensure everyone travels safely to and from school:

Intermittent On- and Off- Ramp Closures
The following ramps are expected to be intermittingly closed this month from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. nightly. Certain ramps may reopen earlier as crews complete work in certain areas.
Closure: Northbound I-605 Off-Ramp to Eastbound Katella Avenue

Closure: Northbound I-605 Loop Off-Ramp to Westbound Katella Avenue

Closure: Southbound I-605 Loop Off-Ramp to Eastbound Katella Avenue

Closure: Southbound I-605 Loop On-Ramp from Eastbound Katella Avenue
