ORANGE – Two full road closures are planned at Oso Road and La Zanja Street in San Juan Capistrano as part of OCTA’s rail safety enhancement program.
Oso Road will close for approximately two weeks beginning at 6 a.m. Monday, June 13. Detour signs will be posted and drivers can use La Zanja Street during the closure.
Once work at Oso Road is complete, La Zanja Street will close for one week beginning at 6 a.m. Monday, June 27. Drivers can use Oso Road to detour around the La Zanja Street closure.
The closures are necessary to allow construction workers to repave the area and install new medians on both sides of the railroad crossings. Pedestrian and bicycle access at both crossings will remain open during the closures.
Once completed, the improvements will enhance safety for drivers and pedestrians through upgraded and updated warning devices, additional gate arms, extended and raised street medians, improved signage and coordinated traffic signals.
Crews are improving five crossings in San Juan Capistrano as part of OCTA’s rail safety enhancement program: Avenida Aeropuerto, Del Obispo Street, La Zanja Street, Oso Road and Verdugo Street. All five crossings are anticipated to be completed this fall.
OCTA is partnering with eight cities to implement the $85 million program, which includes safety enhancements at 50 railroad crossings throughout Orange County.
After the improvements are made, cities are able to apply for quiet zone status.
By law, engineers now must sound their horns up to four times when they approach a crossing. If a quiet zone is established, horns only will sound in emergency situations.
