Metrolink Track Maintenance To Begin Feb. 11

Noise from grinding work may be heard in surrounding area

ORANGE – Metrolink will begin rail grinding maintenance work next week to maintain track strength and reduce wear and tear on train wheels.

Grinding work will take place at night between 9 p.m. and 4 a.m. from Feb. 11 to Feb. 14. Work will begin in Fullerton and travel south along the Orange County Line to Tustin.

The grinding and refinishing of Metrolink rails often leads to a spray of sparks generated by electric motors that power the grinding machine. The grinder sprays water on the tracks before and after grinding and fire suppression crews follow to ensure safety.

Noise from the work can be heard in the surrounding area. The machine moves along the tracks at 5 to 10 mph and may make a few passes in some areas to complete the work.
