ORANGE – As part of the Riverside Freeway (SR-91) eastbound lane addition project, the eastbound SR-91 to northbound Chino Valley Freeway (SR-71) connector will close for 15 days beginning at midnight, Saturday, Oct. 9.
Detours will be clearly marked and motorists may get around the closure by exiting Serfas Club Road, turning left onto Serfas Club Road and then left onto the westbound SR-91 to the northbound SR-71.
The closure is necessary to realign and repave the connector as the project prepares to wrap up at the end of this year.
The project will widen six miles of eastbound SR-91 between SR-241 and SR-71. More than 300,000 drivers travel SR-91 daily, making it one of the most congested freeways in Southern California.
When complete, it will ease traffic on a key stretch of the freeway by improving a traffic chokepoint near Coal Canyon Road.
The project is primarily funded with $47.9 million from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. The Riverside County Transportation Commission provided $5 million for the project and $6.6 million in tolls from the 91 Express Lanes are being allocated by the Orange County Transportation Authority.

This is the first of numerous improvements planned for the SR-91. Construction is expected to begin next year to add one new lane in each direction from the Cost Mesa Freeway (SR-55) to the SR-241.
