Deliver Capital Projects
Continue to advance the San Diego Freeway (I-405) Improvement Project
- OCTA, in cooperation with the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans), is widening the I-405 between the SR-73 and the I-605. The widening includes the addition of one general-purpose lane in each direction on the I-405 from Euclid Street to the I-605 interchange, plus the addition of an express lane in each direction on the I-405 from the SR-73 to the eastbound SR-22.
- In April, the Board approved the terms and conditions with Caltrans to establish roles and responsibilities related to project delivery, funding and financing, operations, and usage of potential net excess revenues.
- In November, four design-build contractors were short-listed for the design and construction to expedite project delivery.
Open the I-5/Ortega Highway interchange
- In September, the newly improved I-5 /Ortega Highway Interchange opened to motorists. Bridge reconstruction, along with new and widened lanes, ease travel at this major interchange for local drivers and regional commuters and visitors.
Complete a new lane on SR-57
- In April, OCTA and Caltrans marked the opening of the SR-57 Northbound Widening Project’s southern segment – a new, northbound five-mile general-purpose lane, as well as other capital and operational improvements – from Katella Avenue in Anaheim to Lambert Road in Brea.
Meet SR-91 project milestones
- Construction on the SR-91 Bypass Lane Project continued throughout 2015. The approximately twomile project will improve the SR-91 by extending a westbound lane from the northbound SR-55 to the westbound SR-91 connector through the Tustin Avenue interchange.
- The SR-91 Westbound Lane Addition Project is in the final year of construction and will add a new fourmile westbound lane between the SR-57 and the I-5. Upon completion in early 2016, the project will add a lane in the westbound direction, as well as widen seven bridges and realign eight on- and off-ramps.
Break ground on the third segment of the I-5 in South County
- The I-5 South County Improvement Project is well underway and is being constructed in three segments to add approximately six miles of carpool lanes between San Juan Creek Road in San Juan Capistrano and Avenida Pico in San Clemente.
- The southernmost segment, from Avenida Pico to Avenida Vista Hermosa broke ground in February. The western half of the Avenida Pico Bridge has been demolished and crews are constructing the new, wider bridge.
Other freeway accomplishments
- In January, OCTA began the public outreach process for the environmental review on the I-5 Project – from the I-405 to the SR-55 – by hosting public information meetings in Irvine and Tustin.
- In November, as part of the environmental review process, OCTA held a public open house in Irvine for the I-405 Project, from the I-5 to the SR-55.
- The draft environmental document for the SR-55 Improvement Project between the I-405 and the I-5 was released in late November.
- The I-5 Central Project, which adds a second carpool lane to the I-5 between the SR-57 and the SR-55, entered the design phase in August.
OC Bridges meets milestones
- In December, traffic lanes opened on the new bridge at the Tustin/Rose Overcrossing. The project is on schedule to be completed in Spring 2016.
Street and synchronization improvement funding
- In January, the Board approved funding recommendations for 43 projects totaling nearly $20 million in Regional Surface Transportation Program funds for pavement rehabilitation and preservation.
- In April, the Board awarded $47 million for 23 projects to improve busy streets and intersections. Seven additional projects will receive funding to synchronize traffic signals.
