Synchronizing signals is a key element of Measure M to move motorists more efficiently.

Orange County has more than 7,300 miles of streets and roads, all of which need ongoing care to remain viable. But maintaining existing infrastructure is only part of the job. Measure M helps improve traffic flow and prepare for the future by synchronizing traffic lights, widening streets, adding more lanes to existing streets and building underpasses and overpasses on major streets that cross train tracks.

Signal synchronization Since 2009, a total of 51 signal projects were planned or in progress. This included $38 million in improvements over 363 miles and 1,360 signals. During fiscal year 2012-2013, 24 projects were approved for 533 signals covering 141 miles. PROJECT P

Local Fair Share dollars Last fiscal year, OCTA distributed $44.5 million to cities for local street and road improvements throughout the county. Since 2011, $88.6 million has been allocated to local jurisdictions. PROJECT Q

The Regional Capacity Program The Regional Capacity Program awarded approximately $36.5 million in new funding for 10 projects through the arterial capacity enhancement, intersection capacity enhancement, and freeway arterial/street transition categories. These 10 projects resulted in an average capacity improvement of 28 percent. PROJECT O

Smart Streets Program completed As part of the first Measure M, the fourth and final component of the Smart Streets Program was completed with improvements to Imperial Highway.

Grade separation projects The purpose of the OC Bridges Program is to separate car traffic from trains by building underpasses and overpasses on major streets along the Burlington Northern Santa Fe (BNSF) rail corridor. Projects on Orangethorpe Ave. and Tustin Ave./Rose Dr. broke ground this year while work on the Placentia Ave. and Kraemer Blvd. projects continued. Construction at the Sand Canyon Blvd. overcrossing on the Los Angeles - San Diego - San Luis Obispo (LOSSAN) rail corridor continues.
