Freeways

Planning for the future. Creating jobs.

In addition to ensuring Orange County’s current and future mobility, the 13 freeway improvement projects under M2 provide another benefit for the county. These freeway projects put people to work by creating or sustaining 1,657 jobs during the past fiscal year.

That was a big benefit for Todd Kutin. Todd is a project manager with a construction company. He’s good at what he does. He’s helped improve freeways and bridges around California. And now Todd is helping improve the State Route 91 (SR-91), working with two project teams on the SR-91 Westbound and Eastbound Lane Addition Project.

Todd and his coworkers are adding new lanes in a six-mile stretch of the SR-91 from State Route 55 (SR-55) to State Route 241 (SR-241).

Focusing on the projects that matter most Improving mobility

Several freeway projects are under construction and progressing closer to completion. A new six-mile lane is being added in each direction on the SR-91 between SR-55 and SR-241 to increase capacity and help relieve congestion. On State Route 57 (SR-57), construction continued on two projects to improve traffic flow by adding a new northbound lane from Orangethorpe Avenue in Placentia to Lambert Road in Brea, and from Katella Avenue to Lincoln Avenue in Anaheim. Planning ahead

It takes years of planning before any construction begins. For the Interstate 5 (I-5), environmental studies were in progress between the SR-55 and SR-57, and between the State Route 73 (SR-73) and El Toro Road. Final design began for improvements between Avenida Pico and San Juan Creek Road, and for the reconstruction of the interchange at State Route 74 (SR-74) Ortega Highway in San Juan Capistrano. Expediting projects

The OCTA Board took steps to advance projects through the M2020 Plan, which expedites delivery of the majority of the M2 freeway program by year 2020. Working with our partners at the State of California Department of Transportation (Caltrans), a total of 14 freeway improvement projects are expected to be delivered on Interstate 405, I-5, SR-55, SR-57 and SR-91 — completing two-thirds of the M2 freeway improvements by year 2020.
