Meet Your Driver: Parris Cornelious
Parris Cornelious was born to drive.
All four of her sisters and her stepdad drive professionally, so becoming a coach operator was natural. She began her career part time at LA Metro, driving passengers to LAX and mastering many of the skills she still uses today.
Then one day her mother said, “You need a job with benefits.”
And that’s why, about five years ago, Parris joined OCTA as a full-time driver. The position offers significant benefits including annual wage increases, health insurance, retirement and wellness benefits, education reimbursement and professional development opportunities.
As an extra board driver, Parris gets to know passengers and routes all over the county. “That’s one of the things I enjoy most about my job,” she explains. “I get to do something different every day.” Extra board drivers typically don’t have regular routes and fill in where needed.
Her favorite routes are those like OC Rapid (formerly Bravo!) where passengers are ready, phones and passes in hand for fast and efficient boarding, which helps Parris adhere to her schedule.
When people discuss other kinds of employment, Parris tells them she’s happy with her career with OC Bus and is encouraging one of her sisters to sign up with OCTA as well. “I’m sticking with transit,” she explains. “When the world shut down during the pandemic, we had jobs.”
If you’d like to be part of the OC Bus team, let us know—we’re hiring.
