Since 1994, Metrolink has played an essential role in Orange County transportation. Over the decades, annual boardings on Metrolink’s Orange County Line have grown to over 2.8 million as people continue to choose this reliable passenger rail service to connect with employment and weekend adventures. Thanks to funding from OC Go, Orange County’s half-cent sales tax for transportation improvements, the Orange County Line was expanded to meet demand.

It all started in 1994.

In 1994, regular Metrolink service came to Orange County. The Orange County Line offered weekday commuter service and carried 1,600 passengers daily it’s first year. This launched the beginning of a beautiful relationship for both business commuters and eventually weekend riders.

1996

Our millionth rider!

After just two short years the Orange County Line transported its one-millionth passenger.

2002

Two key OC stations open

The Tustin Station and the Laguna Niguel/Mission Viejo Station open to relieve the commuter congestion at the Irvine Station.

2002

Rail 2 Rail program begins

Metrolink, Amtrak and Caltrans intruduce the Rail 2 Rail program in September increasing travel options and improving connectivity.

2005

Ridership surpasses 3.3 million.

The Orange County Line enjoys a record year and commuter ridership surpasses 3.3 million.

2006

Metrolink Weekends begins!

Weekend Metrolink Travel on the Orange County Line begins, giving more opportunities to play and explore the county.

2007

Buena Park Station opens

Metrolink opens its 11th Orange County station in Buena Park. The station offers commute options for residents of northern Orange County.

2011

Angels Express is launched

Service to Angels weeknight home games is introduced at the start of the 2011 season. There were more than 20,000 boardings the first year.

2011

Train frequency expands

The Metrolink Service Expansion Program (MSEP) was intruduced in 2011 adding 6 additional trains throughtout the day between Fullerton and the Laguna Niguel/Mission Viejo Stations.

Positive Train Control (PTC) introduced

Metrolink became the first passenger rail system to implement Positive Train Control (PTC) in the nation, providing additional safety measures for its riders.

2014

Anaheim Regional Transportation Intermodel Center opens (ARTIC)

The City of Anaheim unviels a new intermodal transportation hub providing service for Metrolink, Amtrak, OC Bus, Anaheim Resourt Transportation (ART) along with other transit providers.

2016

Metrolink introduces mobile app

A new mobile ticketing app is introduced, making it easier for riders to purchase and activate ticket using their smartphones.

2016

Clean-buring locomotives arrive

Metrolink's first Tier 4 locomotives begin operation ont the Orange County Line. They are the cleanest in the nation with reduction of particulates and nitrogen oxide emissions by up to 85 percent.
